Ma’s Deep Shinola

Think you can challenge Ma and beat her at her own game? In the Grandma card game Ma’s Deep Shinola, you race against the other players to get rid of all your cards. So, leave your canes and walkers at home. Play cards from your hand onto the pile in ascending order, use special cards to sabotage others and avoid having to pick up the deck yourself. Try to play all your facedown cards without Ma appearing or you might end up in Deep Shinola.

Objective

Get rid of all your cards, avoid getting in Deep Shinola and picking up the whole pile!

Game Over

When someone successfully plays their final card.

Winner

Whoever gets rid of all their cards first, including their facedown piles.

How To Play

Shuffle and deal out 3 piles of 3 facedown cards in front of each player, with another 1 card face up on top of each pile. No peeking! Then deal each player 5 cards to hold in their hand. Players may choose to swap out their best cards in their hand with the face up cards in front of them.

Starting to the left of the dealer, everyone plays a card onto the discard pile (or multiple if they match). Each card must be of an equal or higher value than the one before or a specialty card.

Anyone who can’t play on the previous card has one chance to draw from the deck. If they still can’t play using that card, they must pick up the whole deck as punishment!

Once a player has emptied their hand completely, they pick up their face up cards and play with those. After those are gone, they must play using their facedown cards without looking.

Any failure to play means picking up the deck as normal, but if you manage to get through all your facedown cards and empty your hand, you win!
